Chile (5,300 kt) alone produces over a quarter of the world's copper, a position it has held without interruption for decades thanks to the Chuquicamata deposit, one of the world's largest open-pit mines — the Democratic Republic of Congo (3,300 kt), the second producer, owes its recent rise to the Katanga Copperbelt, largely financed by Chinese investment.
