Raw silk (production)

Raw silk production — six data points (1965/1975/1985/1995/2005/2015), shorter than other agricultural crops for lack of FAOSTAT coverage after 2015 (the 2020 point is filled from Atlasocio). Measures the processed product after reeling — an order of magnitude smaller than raw cocoons, another FAOSTAT series not used here.

China (50,000 t) produces more than the rest of the world combined, and India (38,900 t) accounts for most of the remainder — sericulture remains an extremely geographically concentrated activity, shaped by centuries of technical know-how passed down in Asia and never really scaled up industrially elsewhere in the world.
