China (13.2 Mt) alone catches almost as much as Indonesia and India combined (7.4 and 5.5 Mt) — a dominance driven by its distant-water fleet, the world's largest, and by intensive coastal fishing that has considerably depleted stocks in its own waters, pushing its fleet to operate ever farther from its coasts.
