Life expectancy

At birth · years · annual 2000–{{year}} · World Bank WDI · {{count}} countries

Life expectancy at birth, in years — a continuous annual series from 2000 to 2023. Placed at the head of the Health family: the most legible development indicator there is.

World Bank, World Development Indicators (SP.DYN.LE00.IN).

Time slider. A red-to-violet palette rather than a uniform green one: a country under 55 years should read immediately as red, one above 83 years as violet — the development scale should be readable at a glance.

Monaco (86.4 years) narrowly leads the rest of the developed world, but the starkest gap remains between extremes: over thirty years separate Monaco from Nigeria (54.5 years), where malaria, maternal and infant mortality, and underfunded health systems still weigh heavily on average life expectancy.
