A composite score aggregating some sixty criteria — manpower, equipment, logistics, finances, geography. The PowerIndex is inverted: the lower it is, the greater the power, 0.0000 being the theoretical perfect score.
Global Firepower 2026, 145 countries. The weighting is not published in detail and nuclear weapons are not part of the calculation: this is an index of conventional potential, to be read as an order of magnitude.
A composite index adds up incommensurable quantities: a tank is not an aircraft carrier. It is useful for placing countries in leagues, not for separating two neighbours.
Ukraine gained around twenty places between 2021 and 2024, which mostly measures the influx of Western equipment. Israel remains far from the top despite dominating its region militarily and holding nuclear weapons: that is the limit of the exercise.
