SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, annual deliveries 1950-2025 summed over a rolling five-year window: the 1990 value covers 1986 to 1990, hence a series starting in 1954. TIV ignores contract value: two identical aircraft weigh the same whether sold, donated or handed on second-hand. That is what makes 1970 comparable with 2025.
The five-year total is a deliberate choice: deliveries arrive in waves, and a single contract would completely distort an isolated year. Exporting also creates a thirty-year dependency — spares, munitions, upgrades.
The United States and Russia dominated the market throughout the post-war era; since 2022 the Russian share has collapsed, its industry absorbed by its own war. France held second place worldwide over 2019-2023, carried by the Rafale.
