{{fields}} fields and {{plants}} gas/oil plants, linked by the main transport corridors
This map brings together three links of a single industry: producing oil and gas fields (squares), the power plants that burn those hydrocarbons (circles), and the transport corridors connecting them (gas and oil pipelines, switched on from the legend). Colour gives the substance — gas, oil or mixed — while size gives a field's annual output or a plant's installed capacity.

Only operating sites are kept, above two thresholds: 5 Mboe per year for a field, 500 MW for a plant. Fields less than 5 km apart are merged into a single point carrying their combined output — the source publishes licence by licence, not field by field. The ranking counts sites rather than volumes: a plant's megawatts and a field's barrels cannot be added together.
The map sets two geographies against each other. Extraction follows the reserves: the Persian Gulf, western Siberia, the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, the Brazilian and West African offshore basins. Combustion follows consumption: the coasts of East Asia, Europe, the United States. Where the two overlap, a country burns what it extracts; everywhere else, the gap between squares and circles is exactly what corridors and LNG carriers are there to close.
One site in three in this selection is in the United States, far ahead of China and Russia. The largest producing fields remain Burgan in Kuwait and Rumaila in Iraq, both discovered in the middle of the twentieth century. A quarter of the fields listed are offshore. Downstream, close to two thirds of the plants run on gas alone: gas has become the fossil fuel of power generation, while oil holds only a marginal place there.
