WRI Global Power Plant Database v1.3.0, manually updated for commissionings and closures after its last update. 249 sites recorded: 166 operating, 68 shut down, 15 under construction.
Point size encodes installed capacity (megawatts), colour its status. The ranking and subtitle deliberately track two counters: total sites (which sizes the map symbols) and operating sites (which feeds the ranking) — adding them together would credit countries whose fleet is in fact shut down.
The United States hold nearly a third of the world's fleet (73 sites), well ahead of China (25, expanding rapidly) and France (22, the highest density in the world relative to population). Germany, once a pillar of European nuclear power, shut its last reactor in 2023: nearly all of its 8 recorded sites are now retired.
