GDP Growth

Annual %, constant prices · 1970–2025 · World Bank · 200 countries

The annual change in GDP at constant prices, that is, once inflation has been removed. It measures what was actually produced in addition, not what has become more expensive.

World Bank, 1970-2025, 200 countries. Growth is calculated against the previous year: a spectacular rebound almost always follows a collapse and says nothing about the level reached.

A high rate does not mean a strong economy. A country starting from a very low base grows fast mechanically, and 7% on a modest GDP adds less to world output than 1.5% in the United States.

Two years stand apart in the whole series: 2009 and above all 2020, the only year in which nearly every economy contracted simultaneously. Measured against 2020, the 2021 figures are catch-up, not performance.
