An accession dates a geopolitical shift better than any speech. NATO and European Union enlargements follow each other within a few years, and in the same order.
Finland, neutral since 1948, joined NATO in 2023 — thirteen months after the invasion of Ukraine — and Sweden in 2024, after two centuries of non-alignment. Conversely, the United Kingdom is the only state ever to have left the European Union.
