Seven of the world's top ten container ports are Chinese, led by Shanghai with 51.5 million TEU handled in 2024 — more than the combined total of Europe's top ten ports. Singapore (37.5 million), the only non-Chinese port on the podium, owes its rank to its position as a crossroads between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea rather than to an industrial hinterland of its own.
