Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Two incompatible RSF methodologies had to be aligned in a single direction: the open 2002-2012 scale (0 = best score) is transformed into (100 − raw score) to join the 0-100 scale of the 2013-2026 era (higher = freer) — an unofficial alignment, documented in the generator. 2011, with no RSF report published, reuses 2012's values.
Time slider. The 2002-2012 values, being transformed, can occasionally exceed the usual 0-100 bounds of the recent era.
Norway (93), the Netherlands (89) and Estonia (89) top a ranking dominated by Scandinavia and the Baltic states; North Korea (13) and Eritrea (10), the world's two most closed media systems, sit at the bottom — with no independent press whatsoever, under total state control.
